Melani McAlsister is Associate Professor of American Studies and International Affairs at George Washington University, where she teaches courses on U.S. cultural history, the U.S. in the world, culture and globalization, and the 1970s. Her areas of expertise include cultural encounters between the United States and the Middle East from 1945 to the present, the U.S. religious right and foreign policy, and globalization. She has written extensively on these topics in the Washington Post, The New York Times, The Nation, and the Journal of American History’s special issue on History and September 11. She is the author of Epic Encounters: Culture, Media, and U.S. Interests in the Middle East, 1945-2000 (2001) and is currently working on a book about the ways in which popular culture has played a role in the mainstreaming of evangelical politics.
